Otherwise, here’s a simple explanation:
Every week you receive an email to tip the ten games of the current round for the English Premier League.

You tip by replying to that email or by clicking on the link that takes you to our website to submit your tips.

Tipping options: The following Tipping Options will be available for each game during the competition (the two teams competing in each game are referred to below as “Home Team” and “Away Team”): Option 1: Home Team to
win outright (1) Option 2: Away Team to win outright (2) Option 3: Home Team and Away Team to draw (X)

A correct tip gets points calculated as follows: The number of players minus the number that tipped the match correctly. For example, there are 20 players. Seven players tipped the game correctly as a home win, and the home team wins. These seven players get 13 points, calculated as 20 minus 7. Other players get zero. The winner will be the player with the most points collected through receiving points for the correct tips. Round
winners are decided by most points collected in the particular round.

Round winners receive a round prize.

Depending on the number of participants and the size of the pool, prizes will be awarded to the top placed players and the single winners of the group rounds.

We have been organising football tipping comps for many years and have had a lot of fun. Typically, there is a dinner at the end of the tournament, and we ask the winner to contribute.

Explanation to how I made the ranks error

The spreadsheet I use gives me instant points when I type a result in. When I want to find out who may win a round, I forecast some results to get a combination of round winners.

The last two results I typed in were the yet to be played Round 20 games of Everton v Newcastle and the Leeds v Villa games. In the combination of seeking a Round 20 winner, I gave both games to the away sides. I forgot to erase these hypothetical results before I published the current ranks in the last email.

This error gave 25 points to the two players who picked Newcastle and 11 points for Villa tipsters. One player ended up with 36 ‘ghost’ points. That is why some players were higher on their actual ranks.

As of 8 March 2022, there are six scheduled postponed games, 13 unscheduled rearranged games and one game brought forward. I checked all of these to determine if they have any hypothetical results typed in error and it all checks correct.
